dusted off my sewing machine

actually, i didn’t.

i was so geeked off of my idea to make a denim clutch that i didn’t even bother to dust the thing off. i was also so geeked that i didn’t bother to use the zipper foot for my sewing machine to put in the zipper.

can i just say here that i hate hate hate sewing in zippers for some reason? they were the most painful thing for me to do in school when i studied fashion design 50 million years ago.

but that wasn’t the end of my geeked-ness. nope, sure wasn’t. i also didn’t realize my interfacing was double-sided adhesive before i ironed the thing down. that meant that my lining was sticking to the inside of the bag, which just wasn’t going to work. i worked around it, but it turned out a little errrrrr…bulkier than i had planned.

see, sometimes i get so stoked about an idea that i just jump right on in.

yes, i goes in, honey.

full throttle all like, “today is clutch day!!!!!”

it’s pretty needless to add here that my clutch had some bumps along the way, but i think it came out rather snazzy for my first go at it.

make yo’ own :: jeweled ribbon headband

the longer my hair gets the more i feel i need to do something with it. it’s not long enough for one of those cutesy top buns just yet, but i can toss a headband on and this jeweled one (diy tutorial by whimseybox) is just the thing to knock my curly fro’ up a few notches for a funky look. and hello!! it’s so daggone easy to make. i’m actually not the blingiest person on the block, but i imagine you can go wild with trinkets to add to ribbon.

make yo’ own :: giant tissue paper flowers

okay, i know it seems like i’m on this ginormous kick after last week’s big ol’ pom pom how-to vid, but this might actually come in handy for that wedding i’m planning. and since it might be useful to me, i figured it might be useful for someone else too!

i remember when i was a little girl my pop would let me get a gigantic paper tissue flower whenever we went to king’s dominion. i doubt if they still sell them, but i thought they were the most wonderful things back then. now i can make my own! woot! woot!

here goes…

let your creative side fly

the thing about letting your creativity fly is that all you need is an idea, a few materials and a little space to make it happen.

bowl of glass beadsi’m a maker. i dig making things. i love painting, crafting, doodling, making jewelry…creating stuff. if i could sing i’d make a record, but that ain’t my talent.

but anyway, it’s sooooo important for me to go off of my own creative vibes. it’s so easy to look at something that someone else has created and say, “hey, i can do that!!” but why would you want to? just grab your tool of choice (paintbrush, pen, pencil, camera, sewing machine, needle, etc.) and get busy doing the best to creatively express…you!

my process usually works like this: good music + a glass of wine + table space = creative zone awesomeness. just ask my little family. i zonessssss out!!

and i.need.that. like air, for real.

i’m sure you creatives dig where i’m coming from.

glass charmsometimes my ideas come out great. sometimes not so much. but it’s not always about the end product (and i say “product” loosely, it’s rare that i sell a thing), a lot of times for me it’s the process. seeing what works and what doesn’t. what i enjoy putting together and what i don’t.

and a lot of times your creation is really only a fail because it doesn’t come out the way you had envisioned. and you know, there aren’t really a lot of wrongs in being creative (unless you’re trinidad james, but that’s another story) and that’s what’s so fly about it.

so when a piece doesn’t come out the way i dreamed it up in mind, i usually take off in another direction to create something else. or trash it.

whatever works.

spottedi have tons of ideas. an overwhelming amount of them. sometimes i think/dream up so many things that i can do that i get exhausted. for real!! then i end up doing nothing.

painted thingsbut i’m learning to do what i can, when i can and not pressure myself to do everything at once. i jot down my thoughts then take my time creating them.

let the creativity flow naturally.

more painted thingsand every once in a while, i’ll create a thing that i absolutely love.

make yo’ own :: ginormous pom poms

it’s fun to learn a new thing, right? so why not learn how to make a big ol’, gigantic, almost bigger than your head pom pom! it’s the hot, happening craft, don’t you know?

get your yarn out and enjoy this how-to vid via threadbanger.

and let me just go ahead and double stamp what corinne said about justina blakeney’s blog and pinterest page! i adore justina’s style and in my mind i’m just as boho cool as she. ha!

a Christmas of earrings, caramels and a red trash can

this year i told my husband that we should start a Christmas tradition. he said, in his ever present sarcasm, “we have one. i buy the tree and you decorate it.”

i’m not too convinced that that’s a tradition as much as a routine, but okay, dear! but what is a tradition is spending time with our family. lots of food and lots of laughter and good times to be had.

i have to admit that i was pretty dang tired on Christmas eve and Christmas because i had spent the days (and nights) before making a ridiculous amount of caramels and plenty jewelry to give as gifts to my family and friends. next year i’ll start much earlier. i usually do, but i guess this year i wanted to feel a little fire under my butt. or something like that.

and once the fire started, i couldn’t stop!! let me just say, there’s nothing like putting on some music (thank you, pandora!!) and gettin’ your creative thang on.

ode to my ol’ school heart.

the kick-off to our Christmas happened where it always does, at my pop and stepmama’s on Christmas eve. this year we did a dollar store exchange which was pretty cool. well, it was cool to open your gift. it wasn’t, however, all that fun trying to find ONE GIFT for each person at the dollar store. it was my stepmama’s idea. i told her next year, i’m just making stuff.

on Christmas we were off to my mother-in-law’s early where her two small children were crazy excited about their new toys and i watched as my sis-in-law nearly passed out from blowing up a sumo bumper bopper. i jest, but i was a bit concerned that she’d eventually need oxygen. that evening, we headed to spend the evening with my mama, grandma and a host of other folks. i have to say, my grandma, bless her heart, gave us the most memorable gift ever…

and it’s RED!!! haha!! we all got a good laugh from this one, even though i think it was meant to be a totally serious gift. i asked my grandma, “but why red? my bathroom isn’t red??” she said, “look over there at that Christmas tree…everything goes with red.”

well, true that grandma.

anyway, i hope that you and yours had a very Merry Christmas!!!
