good-bye dc’s legendary godfather of go-go chuck brown

the city weeps.

chuck brown is gone.

it’s unbelievable. to see that man perform (even in his 70s) you really believed that he would forever be up on that stage crankin’ and making the crowd move. but so it goes, yesterday the dc area mourned the loss of our beloved godfather of go-go.

yes, we all cried and we were all very saddened by the news of his passing yesterday, but we also pulled out our chuck cds and tapes and pumped up the radio stations that played chuck nonstop and did what he would’ve wanted…we jammed.

we tweeted, facebook’d, called our friends, talked about the shows and the last times we saw chuck, we talked about meeting him in person and what chuck songs reminded us of a specific time. some were able to go to soul factory for a vigil, some made it over to howard theatre to pray and celebrate his life, we all just needed to be around or talk to folks about our loss because chuck brown was really like family.

if you’ve ever been to a chuck brown then you know what i mean. i’m talking about people getting together to have a good time, bodies moving non-stop, sweating, dancing, groovin’, shoutin’ out the lyrics to every joint. to see chuck brown perform live was an experience. its a shame that his popularity never soared outside the washington, dc area, but you know, i think it’s okay for us who truly loved him and his music. he was ours.

i was dancing to “bustin’ loose” back in the ’70s before i even really knew who chuck brown was. as a matter of fact, my mother just mentioned that one day she came to pick me up from school at satellite americana on good hope rd. in s.e. and my teacher was showing us how to do the rock while “bustin’ loose” played. and that’s how it goes for chuck brown fans, they pass down the love for chuck to the next generation.

growing up my two best friends, shawn and michele, and i would sit on michele’s front steps with her brother’s boombox and blast music during the summer. in fact, i’m pretty sure “moody’s mood for love” was playing in the background when i was about 12 and had my first (and very sloppy) kiss with a kid named brian who lived down the block. whenever i hear that song it takes me back to those steps, the good times we had talking smack about boyfriends and blasting chuck on the radio.

by the time “we need some money” came out in the early ’80s i was a full blown fan. please, who in dc at that time wasn’t singing…mastercard, visa, american express. i ain’t got nothin’ against no credit cards, but the cash is the best? and you had to have a “run joe” t-shirt with mickey and minnie mouse on it. me and my friends hopped on the train to go downtown and buy ours off the vendor stands and when i couldn’t wear those shirts anymore (because the things were worn out) i hung them on my wall.

it wasn’t until years later that i was finally able to meet chuck. i worked as the associate editor of sister 2 sister magazine for close to ten years and throughout that time i met and interviewed a ton of celebrities. from jay-z to beyonce and destiny’s child, queen latifah and luther vandross. just a bunch of folks. but the day i met chuck brown at the black family reunion? oh, i was siced!! ummmm…hello, this is chuck. brown. if you’re not from this area then i’m sure you don’t get it, but his music had been the soundtrack to my life. meeting him and having the chance to tell him how much i loved his music meant a lot to me and it’s something i’ll always treasure.

i’ve seen chuck perform so many times…outdoor festivals in dc, at p.g. community college back in the day, at go-go live in ’87, cabarets, clubs…and i’m thankful that i had the opportunity to see him twice last year. my fam, kindred the family soul, recorded a song with chuck brown and dj kool called “going to the go-go” and they did a few shows with him here in dc.

can i just say how hype i was when i first talked to aja (a dc native by the way) about the song?! oh my goodness, we were so excited that chuck was on the album. when kindred had a performance with the godfather at ibiza for their daydream party last april me, my mama, and friends were all at the front jammin’. chuck was on point as always and the crowd was in full mode. we were all sweating, tired and had sore feet by the time the night was over. and it’s not just seeing him live that gets people in this area excited. you can best believe that nothing gets people more hype in a club, cabaret, cookout, basement house party…than putting on chuck brown.

my husband and i went to see kindred and chuck again on our anniversary and aja’s birthday on september 25, 2011 at the birchmere in virginia. when we were walking towards the venue my husband said, “there’s chuck right there,” pointing to chuck sitting in his car. me, being the pressed chuck brown fan i am (haha!!) was all loud and excited and waving, “heyyyyy, chuck!!” he just smiled back and said hi. there’s no doubt that he was used to getting that kind of love whenever he traveled through dc, maryland and virginia. and trust, nobody else in dc is getting that kind of love from folks. nobody.

my husband recorded some of the show from that night at the birchmere:

i always expected that chuck brown would perform until he just couldn’t anymore and that’s exactly what happened. go-go was in his blood and the music was so much of who he was that i think we all started to get worried when he recently had to cancel shows. chuck brown cancelling? it’s just not something that happens. we all prayed for him to get better.

it’s kind of crazy that one of the most popular chants that we alwaysssssss said chuck shows is chuck baby don’t give a f-ck!! it’s crazy because it’s just the opposite of everything i’ve read about this man and who truly was as a person. he had a deep love for people. so in response to our chant he always said, that ain’t true…i love all of you.

i truly believe he did, but i really think we all loved him just a little bit more.

contemplating pork n’ beans

remember when i posted about having a crappy 2011? well, part of the crapaliciousness of 2011 was due to being laid off. it’s okay. really, it is. i kinda saw it coming. not that that means i knew how to feel about it when the hammer actually came down though, you know?

i’ve never been laid off before and let me tell you i went through a full range of emotions in the very beginning. the first one being a freak out emotion (if you can call it that)…”how am i going to pay my bills??” “oh my goodness, Christmas is coming. i’m going to be so so broke!!” “my unemployment check is how much? no, that can’t be right, you’re joking right? oh, you’re not joking…”

but i got over it. my faith in the Lord is strong so i got myself together and came to the realization that it’s time to pick up it on up and move on.

that’s more of the idealized version of what actually takes place. you know, “pick it on up and move on.” what is being laid off really like on a day-to-day? well, there’s the dropping the child off to school and walking po’ charlie (i promise to post a pic of him soon). then there’s this huge block of time in the middle of the day until i have to walk po’ charlie again and pick the child back up. i’ve managed to fill up those hours doing all sorts of things: job searching and more job searching, washing dishes, washing clothes, talking on the phone, folding clothes, blogging, cleaning the bathroom, dusting, talking on the phone, painting picture frames, googling tutorials on a variety of topics, talking on the phone, making jewelry, dancing to videos on vh1 soul… you know, that kinda thing.

i really should be spending mucho grande time in the gym, but that’s another subject.

then there are times when i am slam bored! you hear me? times when i just sit around and contemplate things. what kind of job should i be looking for? should i stay in social media and web management or do something totally different like become one of those sign turners because, i mean, every business needs a sign turner, right? oh, decisions, decisions!

and then there are the times that i get way inside my head like this one particular recent day: after preparing some pork n’ beans and hot dogs for a little late lunch—not because we’re so terribly broke over here, but because dangit i actually like pork n’ beans and hot dogs—when i wondered, exactly what kind of beans are in pork n’ beans?!?!

i bet you don’t know either.

i decided to google the mysterious bean and here are ten facts gathered from wikipedia about pork n’ beans that i just know you are dying to know.

here goes…

  • pork n’ beans generally consists of navy beans stewed with pork
  • commercially canned pork n’ beans were introduced in the united states during the 1880s
  • a recipe for pork n’ beans was included in the 1832 cookbook the american frugal housewife
  • according to the 1975 better homes and garden heritage cookbook, canned pork n’ beans was the first convenience food
  • pork n’ beans is a stereotypical cowboy food dish
  • pork n’ beans is an american canned classic
  • the dish became popular when h. j. heinz came out with their version in 1895
  • pork n’ beans are usually stewed with tomatoes
  • the dish was mentioned in the song “the old chisholm trail”: “oh, it’s bacon and beans most every day/i’d as soon be a-eatin’ prairie hay”
  • but what wikipedia failed to mention is that pork n’ beans were also mentioned in the hugely popular go-go song “sardines” by the one and only junkyard band. dc stand up!!!!! like to hear it? here it go…

and there you have it, all the pork n’ beans facts you’ll ever need in life.

dutch & mama walk for autism speaks

on saturday dutch and i headed out bright and early to the national mall in dc to meet up with some friends for the autism speaks walk. we got down there around 8:40am-ish and our friends got there…well, just a little later (read: 9:40am-ish. we still love them though). after a while of waiting for them to arrive, dutch got a little concerned.

dutch: where are they, mommy?? (x 500)

mama: they’ll be here soon, buddy. (x 500)

i don’t think he believed me. in fact, he tried to talk me into leaving at one point. okay, at several points. when i told him we had to wait, he got a little antsy.

okay, a lot antsy. and then the super sillies kicked in…

and they were on full blast. and he insisted that i take like 50 million pictures of him in various poses.

this here is just a small sampling. trust me.

there was no stopping the sillies. or the picture taking requests.

he was karate chopping, dancing and the whole nine.

then our friends came and he tried to be all cool mr. smooth. because that’s what dutch does. at first anyway.

then it was time to get walkin’! i didn’t tell dutch how far we’d be walking. not that he gets “miles” anyway.

we walked 2.5 miles. i have to admit that i wanted to cheat at one point and cross a huge field, but the rest of our crew didn’t seem to be down with the idea. i was really ill-equipped for such a long walk. all i had was an apple.

it didn’t matter to dutch though. i think he rather enjoyed the walk.

especially walking on the wall that surrounds the national monument. backwards, of course.

erika williams :: haute caketure

erika made seven different flavors for this cupcake tasting event. cupcakes, wine and milk (of course) made for a really great time.

niki: give me 3 words that describe you.
erika: three words that would describe me are personable—i can get along with just about anyone, energetic—i’m always trying to do something (and i’m a morning person), and dynamic—i’m up for anything—one minute i’m cooking or baking, the next i’m writing, the next i’m partaking in some outdoor adventure. i have to live life while i can!

niki: what made you venture into baking? how long have you been doing it?
erika: baking for others happened by accident really. it’s something that i’ve always loved to do and so i would just do it for friends and family at our bar-b-ques, cookouts and things of that nature. i ended up making a white chocolate cake with a strawberry/raspberry glaze and it was an instant hit. after that a couple of close friends urged me to take my baking to the next level. so here i am. i’ve been baking professionally now for about a year, but for a “hobby” i’ve been doing it forever.

l: erika created this lemon cake for a baby shower with fondant bears and baby. the yellow blanket was just like one that she had as a kid and was her own little personal touch.

r: unlike traditional strawberry shortcake, this three-layer shortcake is made of strawberry cake with sliced strawberries, homemade biscuit and homemade whipped topping placed between the layers—all wrapped in a strawberry buttercream frosting, garnished with strawberries, crumbed biscuit and whipped topping.

niki: where do you draw inspiration for your flavors?
erika: i have, of course, the tried and true flavors that everyone goes for—chocolate, white, red velvet, lemon, etc., but being a “haute” type of girl, i wanted to take it to the next level of flavors. so i thought about those standard flavors and thought about how i could enhance flavors by mixing this ingredient and that ingredient. a lot of it is trial and error and sometimes a bunch of cake ends up in the trash, but if it doesn’t move me, i figure it won’t move anyone else. one of the favorites is my crème brulee cupcake which is my interpretation of the classic dessert, in a tiny cake.

lemon cupcakes! a robust lemon cake with a lemon filling, topped with lemon buttercream frosting and a fondant flower.

niki: what’s your signature flavor?
erika: i’d have to go with my original cake flavor that started it all. the white chocolate strawberry/raspberry. one of my good friends, sonia, said the flavor was like “an explosion in her mouth.” she should have branded that, because now i hear it a lot with the other cakes as well.

double chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting and cookies ‘n cream chocolate bar topping.

niki: what creative power do you wish you had?
erika: if i could have a creative power, i would want it to be for me to be able to sculpt cakes. i haven’t learned how to make the eiffel tower, or the michelangelo out of cake yet. so to be able to do that naturally, without training, would be pretty sweet. but with classes and the will to learn, i’m sure i’ll be on that train in no time.

red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, red sprinkle garnish and a fondant flower!

niki: what music gets your creative juices flowing?
erika: when i get ready to bake or get my ideas going, i throw on the old school or gospel… gap band, marvin gaye, kirk franklin, mary mary, j.moss—stuff that just makes me feel good on the inside. with those good vibes going, sometimes i begin to dance around the house and sing to my dogs then i’m ready to go. i get full of ideas and can’t wait to start trying whatever combinations that i’ve thought of. certain colors can also inspire me. if i see a bright pink or a green i may think of a watermelon cake, or keylime. it can also hit me in the middle of the night, in which case, my sleeping is over.

shonda hurt :: her hustle? planning fabulous events!

loyal. considerate. thinker.

niki: give me 3 words that describe you.
shonda: if i had to choose 3 that describe me professionally they would be organized, logical and efficient. on a personal note i’d choose loyal, considerate and i’m a thinker.

niki: when did you start event planning?
shonda: i’ve been event planning for about 13 years now.

niki: tell me about some of the projects you’ve worked on in recent years. which was your most fun experience? the worst?
shonda: over the past few years i’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, from corporate galas to auto show exhibits & events to luxury brand launches and most recently a high profile wedding. all of the projects bring different challenges, but i would have to say one of the most enjoyable experiences was a food & wine magazine event in aspen for remy martin’s remy vsop and louis xiii brands. we had to produce two events in the same day, which included transforming two venues in a remote locale that required us shipping most of our props and supplies in from other parts of the country. it was a tight rope situation, but one that was so well orchestrated that it went off without a hitch. well, none that we couldn’t resolve, it wouldn’t be an event if there were no glitches.

(l) remy martin event at cipriani new york, (r) soft & beautiful skin fashion show

one of my worst experiences was at the 40/40 club in new york. the event turned out great, but dealing with the venue’s management and all of their last minute changes was a real headache!

niki: any new events coming up?
shonda: currently i’m a part of a team that produces monthly day parties in washington, dc called classic dayz. the parties are geared towards a more mature demographic, folks who aren’t interested in being in the clubs until 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning with the younger set, but who still want to get out and enjoy great music that’s not necessarily the stuff heard nowadays on the radio in a great atmosphere. we’ve been having the parties for over a year now and they’ve been very well attended and received.

i’m also getting prepared for some upcoming events, namely for the new york international auto show in april and during howard university’s homecoming in october.

niki: what creative power do you wish you had?
shonda: hmm… this is a great question, one that i’ve been contemplating since i was a little girl and i still don’t have a definitive answer. lol! i guess if i could do anything creatively i’d be drawn to either writing because i’m an avid reader and i love the power of words. or maybe a great singer because i think being able to move people with an instrument as simple as your voice is awesome, plus, i can barely carry a tune.

shonda & idris elba at the washington auto show

niki: best music (song/artist) to get your creative juices flowing?
shonda: because i work primarily on a freelance basis, rick ross’s “hustlin’” is pretty much my theme song, the jay-z remix version of course!

sometimes when i’m juggling multiple projects or when i’m going after new work, the bridge just plays through my head: hustle real hard/hustle, hustle real hard/hustlin’ hustlin’/hustle-hustlin’ hustlin’/hustle, everyday i’m, everyday i’m/everyday i’m…

(l to r) shonda, sinbad and makia alexander at the urban wheel awards in detroit

niki: any advice for new event planners?
shonda: if you’re looking to become an event planner, i think the best way to learn anything is to start to do it. volunteer to put together family birthday parties and functions, join auxiliary boards at church or at work, all of this will help you start to understand the process of putting together an event. if you’re already event planning, there are a lot of books, magazines and organizations out here geared towards our profession. read as much as you can because these folks have already encountered a lot of the pitfalls and can help you navigate around them.

the mama with moxie

i dig rainy days, stormy nights, pink cotton candy, my son’s laugh, fedoras, pralines and cream ice cream, time to actually read a book, songs with beautiful lyrics, tulips in every color, burning incense, jeans, jeans and more jeans, scented candles, not having to cook dinner, not having to cook at all, sweet tea, puffy clouds, driving with all the windows down, big sunglasses, very high heels, bangles that jangle, long drives, mcdonald’s french fries, good friends, picture taking, walking on the beach, nyc, ol’ school music, painting, hearing spoken word poetry, shrimp tacos, my curly hair, watching my son dance, long skirts, short dresses, acoustic guitar, soul music, watermelon, funny movies, writing, flip flops, conversing with loved ones, bold fingernail polish, chocolate chip cookies, artists, period films, long naps, strolling through eastern market, being a mama, blue glass, cabo san lucas, chocolate with almonds, white wine and saturday mornings…
